The Mystical Essence of the Lord’s Prayer
A Reflection on Authenticity
Since the year 2011, the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer has been my intimate daily sacred chant. Though I first encountered this prayer during my studies of Aramaic at university, it was in the land of Egypt, where I lived for 2 years, that this prayer became the foundation of my spiritual practice
When we engage with the sacred words of the Lord’s Prayer, we are not merely reciting an ancient text; we are stepping into a timeless spiritual transmission. This prayer, spoken in Aramaic by Yeshua , is said to carry the mysteries of the cosmos, of creation, and carries profound layers of vibration, meaning, and guides us into deep communion with the Divine. For me, this prayer has always been an intimate space where I connect to Divine Source, and each word opens a gateway to trust, surrender, and alignment.
Over the years, many have asked me why I choose not to include the final line of the prayer as it is often recited today:
“For Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.” (“Metul dilokhi malkutho whaylo wteshbukato ola lam almin amein”)
Historical Context: The Doxology
The line “For Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever” is a beautiful expression of praise, often referred to as the doxology. However, it is important to recognize that this line is not found in the earliest manuscripts of the Gospels of Matthew or Luke, where the Lord’s Prayer is recorded. Biblical scholars widely agree that it was a later addition, likely introduced for liturgical purposes in the early Christian communities, particularly in the Eastern traditions.
While this addition serves as a powerful affirmation of God’s sovereignty and glory, it shifts the focus from the deeply personal and relational essence of Yeshua’s original words to a more formalized declaration of praise. For those seeking to connect with the prayer in its most authentic form, this line may feel like an extension rather than an integral part of the prayer.
Yeshua’s teachings in Aramaic are profoundly mystical, rooted in simplicity and divine intimacy. The prayer itself is a step-by-step guide to aligning with the Creator:
Abwoon D’Bshmaya
O Source of All Life, Originating One in the Heavens,
Negtadash-shishmaya
May Your name and essence be made holy and radiant within us,
Tite-malcuta newe-sevianak
Let Your kingdom of unity come into being through our intentions and actions,
Aykana-devashmaia agbahara
As above in the heavens, so may it manifest upon the earth.
Ablan-lakhma desunkana niaumana
Grant us this day the nourishment we need in body, mind, and spirit,
Bash-bucalann khauvai
And forgive us our hidden faults and karmic burdens,
Aykana dafekhnan eshvakhna lekhaivain
As we also forgive and release the debts and offenses of others.
Ula-talan lemesiuna elataxan membish
Do not let us fall into the illusions of separation, but guide us safely through all challenges, Freeing us from all that causes harm and binds us to falsehood.
Every phrase of the original prayer is an act of surrender, trust, and opening to the flow of divine grace. It invites us into a profound state of humility and receptivity, aligning our will with the Divine Will.
Why I Choose Not to Include the Doxology
For me, the decision to omit the final line is not about rejection but about honoring the authentic essence of Yeshua’s teaching. My Essene teacher in Egypt many years ago taught me the prayer without the last line and later when I heard the recitation of the last line, I still chose not to use it for many reasons:
Staying True to the Intimate Connection: The original prayer is deeply relational, emphasizing trust, surrender, and divine alignment. Including the doxology feels like shifting from this intimate space into a more formal declaration, which can dilute the relational essence of the prayer.
Focus on Simplicity: Yeshua’s teachings often emphasize simplicity and directness. The Lord’s Prayer, as originally spoken, is a complete spiritual teaching. Adding the doxology, while beautiful, feels like a departure from the elegant completeness of the original words.
Alignment with Mystical Intent: The prayer’s mystical depth invites us to experience divine unity within ourselves and the world. The doxology’s focus on externalized praise can shift attention away from the inward journey of transformation that the prayer offers.
Trusting Intuition: When I first engaged deeply with the Lord’s Prayer, I intuitively felt that the doxology was not part of Yeshua’s original transmission. This intuition has been supported by historical and spiritual insights, affirming my choice to honor the prayer in its original form.
The Vibrational Power of the Original Prayer
Reciting the Lord’s Prayer in its original Aramaic unlocks a vibrational resonance that goes beyond words. Each phrase carries a frequency that aligns the heart, mind, and soul with the Divine. By focusing on Yeshua’s original words, we can enter into the flow of his teachings, experiencing the prayer as a living transmission rather than a recitation.
While I personally choose not to include the doxology, I deeply honor and respect those who feel a connection to its beauty and power. The inclusion or omission of this line does not diminish the prayer’s sacredness; instead, it reflects the diverse ways in which we each connect to the Divine.
May this sacred prayer continue to be a source of healing, inspiration, and divine connection for all who recite it.
I am wishing all of you a Blessed Magdalene Shabbat.
