Overcoming our Greatest Enemies
Embodying the Malkootah
On this Shabbat, I invite you contemplate the profound teachings of Yeshua about the true enemies of the soul. He did not point us toward people or nations as our adversaries, but toward the impulses within us that prevent us from entering the fullness of the Malkootah: the Kingdom, the vibration of Divine Unity within and around us.
Yeshua taught that the three greatest enemies are avarice, pride, and lust. And yet, He did not leave us without a path. He gave us the perfect equation for overcoming these forces and transforming them into powers of light:
Generosity overcomes avarice. When we give freely, without clinging, we dissolve the chains of scarcity and awaken the flow of Divine abundance. Generosity reminds us that we are not owners but stewards, and that every gift we offer returns multiplied in unseen ways.
Prayer overcomes pride. In prayer we bend our ego before the Eternal, remembering that all wisdom, power, and strength come from the Source. Prayer unites us with God in humility, opening the heart to gratitude and dissolving the illusion of separateness.
Fasting overcomes lust. But fasting is not only about abstaining from food. It is about practicing restriction from impulses: the cravings, compulsions, and distractions that pull us away from our Light and highest soul expression. True fasting purifies desire, aligning it with the Divine Will.
This teaching is not merely moral instruction; it is initiation. Yeshua is showing us how to overcome the “demons”, the same way He revealed to Mary Magdalene that her seven demons could be transmuted into powers of light. Lust becomes purified desire. Greed becomes generosity. Pride becomes humility. When transmuted, what once enslaved us becomes the very power that sets us free.
This mystery appears throughout the Scriptures. We can read these words in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Yeshua repeatedly returns to prayer, fasting, and giving as the three pillars of the spiritual life:
- “When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing…” (Matthew 6:3).
- “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen…” (Matthew 6:6).
- “When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father…” (Matthew 6:17–18).
Notice: Yeshua does not say if you give, pray, and fast, but when. These are not optional practices, they are the very equation for living in abundance, rooted in humility, generosity, and purity of heart. There is also something hidden about giving, fasting and praying. When we give, pray, and fast in hiddenness, we overcome the impulse of the ego to seek recognition, power, or control. We transmute shadow into light.
This is how we live not only as spiritual beings longing for heaven, but as spiritual beings in human form, embodying heaven on earth. It is how we walk into the Malkootah, the Kingdom, not as a distant promise but as a living vibration within us now.
The Kabbalistic Lens
This holy equation of Yeshua also is rooted in the Tree of Life:
Generosity (Chesed) — the expansive right arm of the Tree. Chesed is the flow of giving, abundance, and mercy. By practicing generosity, we align with the current of Chesed and heal the demon of avarice.
Prayer (Tiferet) — the heart of the Tree. Tiferet unites heaven and earth, beauty and humility. Prayer lifts us out of the ego’s pride and restores us to balance, aligning us with Divine harmony.
Fasting (Gevurah) — the left arm of the Tree. Gevurah is restriction, discipline, and sacred boundaries. Through fasting, not only from food, but from impulses that dim our light, we step into the holy fire of Gevurah, purifying our desire and refining our soul.
When Chesed (generosity), Gevurah (restriction), and Tiferet (prayer and harmony) work together, the Tree becomes balanced, radiant, and open to the flow of Divine Light. This is how we embody the Malkootah, the Kingdom, in our own being.
On this Shabbat, may we remember:
- To give, and in giving, dissolve avarice.
- To pray, and in praying, dissolve pride.
- To fast, and in fasting, dissolve lust and all impulses that dim our Light.
And may we, like Mary Magdalene, discover that our greatest enemies can become our greatest teachers, leading us to powers of light, to wholeness, and to the joy of living in Sacred Unity.
