The Living Waters
A contemplative dialogue between Maryam Magdalitha and Yeshua
Maryam:
Rabboni, you speak of the Kingdom as though it were near, and yet there are days when I cannot feel its nearness.
Yeshua:
Maryam, when you cannot feel the spring beneath the earth, has the water ceased to flow?
Maryam:
No, Master.
Yeshua:
Neither has the Holy One withdrawn from you.
There are waters hidden beneath what the eyes can see.
And there are waters hidden within the heart.
Blessed is the one who learns where to dig.
Maryam:
Where shall I dig?
Yeshua:
Beneath all that you have gathered to protect yourself.
Beneath your knowing.
Beneath your fear.
Beneath the names you have given yourself.
Dig until you reach the place within you that is still enough to receive.
Maryam:
And what shall I find there?
Yeshua:
Your thirst.
Maryam lowered her eyes.
Maryam:
I have known much thirst.
Yeshua:
Then do not despise it.
For there is a thirst born of absence,
and there is a thirst born of remembrance.
The soul thirsts because somewhere within itself it remembers the Water.
Maryam:
And is longing enough to bring me to it?
Yeshua:
Longing turns the heart toward the Source.
But the heart must also learn to receive.
You have learned how to seek God, Maryam.
Now learn how to allow God to find you.
Maryam:
How does one allow oneself to be found by God?
Yeshua:
Become still enough to be seen.
Become open enough to be entered.
Become empty enough to receive what cannot be possessed.
For the Holy One does not enter you as something you can own.
The Holy One enters as Life.
As breath enters the body.
As water enters the root.
As oil enters the lamp.
And that which receives becomes capable of bearing light.
Maryam:
Then emptiness is holy?
Yeshua:
When emptiness becomes receptivity, yes.
Do not confuse the empty vessel with the abandoned vessel.
The vessel is empty because it has made room.
And what has made room can receive.
Maryam:
Then fill me, Master.
Yeshua:
Maryam, listen carefully.
You have spoken as though the Water were far from you.
But the Kingdom does not come to you as a stranger.
There is a well within you whose waters were there before you knew how to thirst.
Maryam:
Then why do I feel empty?
Yeshua:
Because you have been standing at the mouth of the well asking heaven for rain.
Descend.
Maryam became still.
Maryam:
Into what?
Yeshua:
Into the heart.
Into the silence beneath your prayers.
Into the place where your longing no longer needs words.
There your yearning rises.
And there the Living Waters descend.
When the two meet, you will understand the mystery of union.
Maryam:
What are these two waters?
Yeshua:
One is the cry of the human heart:
“I thirst for You.”
And the other is the eternal answer:
“I have always been here.”
(Maryam wept.)
Maryam:
And when they meet?
Yeshua:
The seeker becomes the dwelling.
The vessel becomes the chalice.
The well becomes the fountain.
What you once sought outside yourself begins to flow from within you.
And then you will understand:
You were never being prepared merely to receive the Living Waters.
You were being prepared to become a place through which they could flow.
Maryam:
And where shall they flow?
Yeshua:
Toward the thirsty.
Toward the forgotten.
Toward the grieving.
Toward those who have mistaken their emptiness for abandonment.
Let the Love you receive become bread.
Let the mercy you receive become mercy.
Let the Light you receive become light for another.
For this is the seal of union:
What descends as Grace
must rise again as Love.
Maryam placed her hands over her heart.
Maryam:
Then let me become a dwelling for the Living One.
Let my heart remain turned toward the Source.
Let the waters enter every place within me that has forgotten Life.
And when I am filled, let me overflow.
Yeshua answered:
Do this, Maryam, and you will understand the mystery:
The one who drinks from the Living Water
does not keep the Water for herself.
She becomes a river.
